Summer Slide
Summer Slide
As any parent knows, the “summer slide” is real. Many students, after weeks or months off from school without educational stimulation, can lose the achievement gains made while in school. That learning loss is especially prevalent for students from low-income families, who don’t have access to summer camps or similar programs that might keep students engaged.
CORE knows that equity practices can play a crucial role in addressing and overcoming the summer slide. Our work never stops, but during the summer break, several of our programs work to keep Scholars and their families engaged and on remain on track with their educational progress.
Our summer Scholar program, SCORE, provides academic enrichment, tutoring, mentoring, and other structured learning activities. The curriculum is balanced for learning and fun activities, to keep Scholars engaged and help prevent the loss of skills and knowledge over summer.
Our Career We Can program provides opportunities for Scholars to learn what career paths are open to them in our community. This summer, a field trip and panel discussion with staff from Live Nation’s House of Blues helped inspire Scholars to look for jobs in Vegas’ entertainment field.
Parent Academy is crucial in helping involve family members in the process. Activities with Scholars and their families allow for bonding opportunities outside the home. The Two-Generational model is key to CORE’s success, and its critical to continue that during any school break.
By implementing a curriculum and other programs that focus on engagement, family and community involvement, CORE helps reduce the summer learning gap for all Scholars, keeping them on par with other students when school resumes. Working for equity among the next generation takes many forms and it’s important to remember that it doesn’t stop and start with the school year calendar … it is a job we gladly work on 365 days a year.
